The Ice Road (2021)

After hearing several people talk about this film both at work and in the comments on here I recently decided to watch:

The Ice Road (2021)

I’d actually seen this film advertised on Sky, but since Liam Neeson seems to have committed to mainly appearing in “straight to DVD” action movies in recent years I wasn’t in a mad rush to watch it.

If you haven’t seen it, it’s an action/adventure/thriller starring (you guessed it) Liam Neeson (Taken), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), Amber Midthunder (The Marksman - ironically also with Liam Neeson) and Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) among others.

This is what it’s about:

After a remote diamond mine collapses in far northern Canada, a ‘big-rig’ ice road driver must lead an impossible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the lives of the trapped miners, despite thawing waters and a threat they never saw coming.

I’ll be honest with you, this isn’t a great movie (it’s no Taken that’s for sure). It has a thin plot, some questionable action scenes and CGI that looks like it came out of a film on the SyFy channel. That said, I actually enjoyed it. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t know why but some actors, although they’re in no way in need of the income now seem to opt for movies that are “beneath them”.

Bruce Willis has started to do it and Jeanne-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal have been doing it for years (although there are reasons those guys don’t get cast in Hollywood movies anymore).

Actors like John Cusack, Brendan Fraser and even the once great and wonderfully crazy Nicolas Cage are all now making films that most of us (unless hardcore fans) won’t even realise exist. 😥

Having said all that, this is an entertaining watch. Sure it’s a typical Liam Neeson movie but this one has a twist. It’s not just Neeson shooting people willy nilly. In fact there are hardly any guns at all till the final act.

I don’t know what actual ice road truckers or indeed fans of the TV show would have to say about this film, but I found it easy to watch and it filled 1 hour and 49 minutes of my life very nicely with no regrets being felt by the end credits.

If you want a reasonably entertaining film that will slightly raise your heart rate while allowing you to switch off your brain for a couple of hours, you should check this one out. I enjoyed it. 👌

The Ice Road is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

Seen it? What did you think? 🤔
