You Should Have Left (2020)

In the comments of my Stir of Echoes (1999) post last week, a regular Screenroomer recommended this film to me:

You Should Have Left (2020)

I watched it on Sunday night and really enjoyed it.

If you haven’t seen it it’s a kind of psychological supernatural thriller that stars Kevin Bacon (Stir of Echoes), Amanda Seyfried (In Time) and not many others.

Here’s what it’s about according to Google:

“Strange events plague a couple and their young daughter when they rent a secluded countryside house that has a dark past.”

As always there’s a lot more to it than that but it’s one of those films that’s hard to describe without giving anything away.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the best film you’ll watch this year and it only has a 5.3 rating on IMDb (not that I pay much attention to ratings), but there’s something about it that’s had me thinking about it for the last couple of days and that’s always a good thing in my book.

It’s well acted, easy to watch, not too scary (if you’re of a nervous disposition) and it’s an interesting concept. It’s also set in Wales which I found quite cool since I was only there a couple of weeks ago.

On top of all that I find Kevin Bacon a pretty likeable actor so that always helps.

The film is based on the 2017 book of the same name by Daniel Kehlmann and is directed by David Koepp (Stir of Echoes) who also wrote the screenplay.

It’s worth checking out if you like these kind of movies. 👍

Seen it? What do you think? 🤔
