Another great film that focuses on story and characters rather than CGI and “big bangs” is:
The Judge (2014)
It stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Robert Duvall (The Godfather), Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket) and Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) among others.
If you haven’t seen it, here’s what it’s about:
Hank Palmer (Robert Downey Jr.), a big-city lawyer, returns to his home town for his mother’s funeral. While he’s there his father (Robert Duvall), the town's judge of many years is arrested on suspicion of murder.
Despite their strained relationship, Hank represents his father as his attorney and along the way reconnects with his estranged family.
This is one of my favourite “drama” type films.
As you’d expect it has solid performances from all the cast. It also has a compelling and heartwarming storyline, a great score by Thomas Newman and some good songs thrown into the soundtrack (listen out for the song “Holocene” by Bon Iver in the scene where RDJ is riding his bike around his home town - I love that song!)
This is really worth a watch. 👍
