For Jaws (1975), three mechanical sharks were built at a cost of $150,000 each.
Steven Spielberg named the shark “Bruce” after his lawyer at the time.
In fact, the shark was intended to be on camera much more than it was, but technical difficulties with the mechanics once they got it into the water forced a lot of scenes to be filmed without the shark in shot. As it happens this created more tension as it’s often what you don’t see that’s scarier.
