Up (2009)

It’s been a while since I ticked a film off my “films I should’ve seen by now but haven’t” list, but on Sunday I finally watched one I’ve been meaning to watch for ages!

Up (2009)

As you’re probably aware by now I’m a bit of a soppy git, and that’s partly why I’ve avoided watching this film till now. I’d heard it was sad prior to watching it and wasn’t sure I wanted to put myself through the emotional trauma. Nonetheless I decided it was time to man up and watch it...I knew I was gonna be in trouble less than ten minutes in. Disney really knows which buttons to push to get certain emotions working! 🥺

If you haven’t seen this film, it features the voice talents of Ed Asner (Elf), the late Christopher Plummer (Knives Out) and Jordan Nagai in his one and only film credit. You’ll also recognise a few familiar voices from other Disney animated movies.

This is what it’s about:

An elderly widower finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of helium balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America to keep a promise he made to his late wife. Unbeknownst to him, an overly optimistic 8 year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell has stowed away on the trip, and the two embark on a much bigger adventure than originally planned.

I loved this film!

It’s a really touching story and it sends you on a rollercoaster of emotions. One minute you’re swallowing hard and fighting back tears, the next you’re laughing at the genius subtle comedy that Disney are masters of.

The animation is superb and the score by Michael Giacchino is perfect and really emphasises those emotional moments. 🙌

If you haven’t seen this movie you really should give it a watch, just have some tissues near by...😭
