The Pledge (2001)

As part of my current obsession with Jack Nicholson movies, last night I watched one I hadn’t seen before:

The Pledge (2001)

This film was mentioned a couple of times in the comments of another post I did last week and after watching the trailer I was hooked.

It’s based on the book of the same name (or sometimes “The Pledge: Requiem for the Detective Novel”) by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, it’s directed by Sean Penn and stars Jack Nicholson (The Shining), Robin Wright (Blade Runner 2049), Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) and Helen Mirren (RED) among many others.

If you haven’t seen it here’s what it’s about courtesy of Google:

“A veteran detective investigates the murder of a child in small-town Nevada, a case he carries over into his retirement by moving into the neighbourhood where the killing occurred. When he begins a relationship with a local mother and her young daughter, he has all the more reason to nail the killer - by this time though, his colleagues are convinced they have long since wrapped up an open-and-shut case.”

I really enjoyed this film!

The story is gripping, the performances are excellent and it keeps you guessing right till the end.

It’s a great role for Jack Nicholson and his character is different to any other that I’ve seen him play so far.

It really makes you appreciate what an amazing actor he is when you consider his last movie before this was As Good As It Gets (1997) and two years after this film he played the hilarious Dr. Buddy Rydell in Anger Management 2003).

Recommended if you fancy a well acted, well directed and gripping crime/mystery/thriller.

Thanks a lot for the recommendation guys. 👍
