When Michael J. Fox finally decided to go public with his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 1998 one of the first people to reach out to him was the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. Ali famously suffered from the disease himself.
During their initial telephone conversation Ali told Fox, "With you in this fight, we can win." Michael J. Fox, overwhelmed by the situation and from hearing those words cried.
The two eventually teamed up to raise awareness for Parkinson’s and even lobbied for more money to be given to research in the hope of finding a cure. They became close friends until Ali’s death in 2016.
Michael J. Fox posted this picture on Twitter as a tribute to the legendary boxer after hearing the news of his death. It was accompanied by the caption:
“Ali, the G-O-A-T. A giant, an inspiration, a man of peace, a warrior for the cure. Thank you.”
