Semi-Pro (2008)

I watched Semi-Pro (2008) last night.

I’d never seen it before but it was an entertaining watch. 😁👍

I was actually quite late in realising how funny Will Ferrell is. It took me three or four attempts at watching Anchorman before I really “got it”, and although I didn’t watch Elf all the way through until about six or seven years ago, it’s since become one of my favourite Christmas films.

I find him hilarious now but I’m obviously playing catch-up with a lot of his movies.

If you haven’t seen Semi-Pro, it stars Will Ferrell (Anchorman), Woody Harrelson (Zombieland), André 3000 (Four Brothers) and Maura Tierney (Liar Liar) among a whole host of other familiar faces.

This is what it’s about courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes:

“In 1976, singer Jackie Moon (Will Ferrell) uses the profits from his only hit single to fulfill a longtime dream of owning a basketball team. His team, the Flint Michigan Tropics, is the worst team in the league, and what's more, the franchise may fold when the ABA and NBA announce plans to merge. It's up to Jackie and the Tropics to turn their game around and slam-dunk their chance for survival.” 🏀

To be honest, this isn’t one of Will Ferrell’s best films but it’s still what you’d expect from a “Will Ferrell film” - It’s funny, silly, sometimes over the top, but inevitably enjoyable if you’re a fan of his and his style of comedy.

Woody Harrelson is good in this and it felt, in a way like a little nod to his other 70s comedy, Kingpin (1996). Woody Harrelson by the way is such a great actor! To be able to pull off comedy and drama the way he does takes talent, and I sometimes think his gets overlooked.

A special mention goes to Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine) who’s really funny as Kyle (the super fan), and also Will Arnett (The Lego Batman Movie) who provides a few laughs as a cigarette smoking, scotch drinking game commentator. 🥃

All in all I enjoyed it and it made me laugh. What more can you ask for? 🤷‍♂️

It’s currently streaming on Netflix.

Seen it? Let me know what you think.👇
