Red Skull Was Played by Two Different Actors

Did you know?

The character Red Skull from the Marvel movies (MCU) was played by two different actors?

Originally appearing in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Red Skull, then played by Hugo Weaving (The Matrix) later returned to the franchise as the keeper of the Soul Stone on the planet Vormir in Avengers: Infinity War (2018). By this point however the character was now being played by a different actor, Walking Dead’s Ross Marquand (Aaron).

The reason? Basically money. 😳

According to Weaving in an interview with “The Wrap”, when signing on to do Captain America, the main cast of the film were obliged to sign up to do three films and were told that the pay would increase with each film.

When it came to Red Skull returning for the last two Avengers films, Weaving was offered a much lower sum for both films than for Captain America alone. He ended up turning down the offer.

Eventually Marquand, already known for his impressions of celebrities and voice work on a number of animated films, was recast as the character and thanks to impressive make up and CGI, a lot of us probably wouldn’t even know the difference. 😡
