Pacific Heights (1990)

In the comments of my Michael Keaton birthday post on Saturday (Facebook), quite a few of you mentioned a film of his that I realised I’d never seen.

Pacific Heights (1990)

I remember this movie coming out and I was aware of it for some years after, then suddenly it just seemed to disappear and I forgot all about it. Luckily you reminded me it was out there so I watched it last night.

If you haven’t seen it, it’s a psychological thriller starring Michael Keaton (Batman), Melanie Griffith (Working Girl) and Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket).

Here’s what it’s about:

A young couple buy and renovate a large house in San Francisco but need to rent out a couple of the apartments to afford the mortgage payments.

When a seemingly ideal tenant (Keaton) moves in then won’t pay his rent or answer the door, the couple realise there’s something sinister about their new tenant and must take drastic measures to fight back.

I enjoyed this film - particularly Michael Keaton’s performance. He’s such a great actor and I don’t think I realised until recently just how versatile he is. He can be totally convincing as both a good guy and a bad guy, but can also pull off comedy! 👌

Melanie Griffith is really good too and I liked how her character toughens up over the course of the film. She shows she’s pretty smart and by no means a push over.

Before this I think I’d only ever seen her in Working Girl (1988).

Matthew Modine got on my nerves for a lot of the film though. I know it’s all part of the story but his irrational hot headed-ness wound me up to the point of, at times, almost routing for the movie’s villain (Keaton).

I guess if I had a psycho living in my house and couldn’t get rid of him I’d probably be a bit p#ssed off as well...😳

Over all, another good film watched thanks to your recommendations in the comments. 👍
