Movie Villain Monday: Hans Landa - Inglorious Basterds (2009)

Movie Villain Monday is back and this week’s movie villain was suggested in the comments on Facebook.

It’s Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds (2009).

Who is Hans Landa?

Colonel Hans Landa (played perfectly by the fantastic Christoph Waltz) is the main antagonist in Quentin Tarantino’s brilliant World War II drama.

He’s an Austrian SS officer also known as “The Jew Hunter” because of his uncanny ability to locate Jews hiding throughout occupied France.

Personality and Characteristics:

Landa is ruthless, cunning, egotistical and highly intelligent, speaking several languages including French, German, English and Italian.

He’s extremely charismatic and can be polite and charming. However, he can suddenly change without warning and become a cold-blooded murderer.

Something that makes Hans Landa interesting is that he states in the film that he doesn’t share in the Nazi prejudice against Jews and only performs his duties because it’s what he’s ordered to do. Regardless of this, he’s terrifyingly efficient and seems to enjoy what he does.

Did you know Inglorious Basterds almost didn’t get made?!

After working on the script for almost a decade, Quentin Tarantino was ready to scrap the project and release the script to the internet as he thought the role of Hans Landa was “unplayable”.

Since the character was so crucial to the movie, he doubted he’d be able to find an actor who could speak multiple languages well enough to pull it off.

Luckily the casting crew begged him for two more weeks to find someone and after a week they found Christoph Waltz. Tarantino said “he gave me my movie back”.

He’s also said that Hans Landa might be the greatest character he’s ever written. I’m inclined to agree with him.

Ironically, in stark contrast to the character that won him a bunch of awards, Waltz used to be married to a Jewish psychologist who he had three children with. His son is now a rabbi.

“Oooooh, that’s a BINGO!”

Thanks for yet another excellent movie villain suggestion!

Who should I feature next week..?
