This has really annoyed me! It’s just another cash-in!
If you’ve read the book you’ll know that the film (as enjoyable as it is) bears hardly any resemblance to it and is vastly inferior.
Unless this new film is a prequel I can only assume that it’s a sequel to the “alternate ending” version in which Will Smith’s character, Robert Neville survives.
The whole point of the story and the title “I Am Legend” is that Neville is the last human alive in a new world where vampires are the dominant species. To introduce more human characters like they did in the movie makes the whole thing meaningless.
