Film Fact #5:
Much like Eddie Murphy in my last film fact, another actor was originally intended to play one of the most iconic characters of our generation, Indiana Jones.
Yep! We could’ve seen a Raiders of the Lost Ark starring not our beloved Harrison Ford, but....yep, you got it, Tom Selleck!
Tom Selleck was George Lucas and Steven Spielberg’s number one choice for the role of Indiana Jones but he couldn’t commit because of his filming schedule on the hit TV series Magnum P.I.
Just a few weeks before filming they reluctantly cast Harrison Ford for the role.
George Lucas was originally against casting Ford due to having used him previously on Star Wars and American Graffiti.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Tom Selleck (check out Her Alibi - 1989 and An Innocent Man - also 1989), but I can’t imagine anyone else playing Indiana Jones with as much charm and charisma as Harrison Ford.
