District 9 (2009)

Today’s sci-fi movie pick is one that blew me away the first time I saw it!

It’s District 9 (2009)

Co-written and directed by Neill Blomkamp (Chappie, Elysium) and starring Sharlto Copley (The A-Team, Maleficent), District 9 is set in Johannesburg, South Africa where aliens from a huge spaceship that hovers above the city have been living in squalid conditions in “District 9” (an over-crowded shanty town), for many years since they first arrived on Earth.

Responding to rising tensions between humans and the aliens (known as “Prawns”), the government decides on a relocation program where the aliens will be moved to a new location outside the city.

While serving notice to one of the “Prawns”, Wikus van de Merwe (Copley) becomes infected with a biological substance beginning a transformation that not only makes him extremely valuable to the government, but that puts him at the mercy of one of the very aliens he’s there to relocate.

Extremely “real” and violent, District 9 was inspired by actual events that happened at District 6, a mixed race neighbourhood in Cape Town, South Africa where over 60,000 of its inhabitants were forcibly removed during Apartheid.

A long awaited sequel has been talked about over the years but nothing is currently in the pipeline. ☹️

If you haven’t seen this film, please watch it! 🦐🦐

Seen it? What did you think? 🤔
