Currently Watching: Scream 2 (1997) - Seriously Though, Does Anyone Still Care About This Franchise?

Scream 2 movie poster

Currently watching Scream 2 (1997) which in my opinion is one of the better sequels to a classic movie (let’s face it, there have been some bad ones!)

It’s also the only decent Scream movie (after the first one) in the whole franchise - and let’s be honest, they’ve had a fair few stabs at it (get it?)

With a new movie due to be released later this week I can’t believe that even now, 27 years after it all began, they’re still trying to squeeze whatever life there is out of this long dead horror franchise.

The third film was so predictable it was just lazy, the fourth was nothing but a desperate attempt at keeping the franchise alive (not to mention certain cast members’ careers), and the fifth and most recent instalment was so forgettable that I don’t remember a thing about it other than [SPOILER ALERT] officer Dewey finally succumbing to one of the many potentially fatal injuries he’s sustained throughout this ridiculous series of films. How much do you want to bet he somehow returns for another instalment somewhere down the line…

Scream has become the horror definition of Die Hard: The wrong girl in the wrong place at the wrong time, except in each instalment Neve Campbell’s character, Sidney Prescott is relentlessly pursued by a different psychopath each time, who, for whatever reason has a personal grudge against her (seriously, how many enemies can one person have?)

At some point you have to wonder why so many different people would want her dead…

As it happens though, the upcoming Scream 6 will be the first Scream movie to not star Neve Campbell as the tortured victim. She passed on the film due to “not being pleased with the offer presented to her” (i.e. they didn’t want to pay her very much).

I really like Scream 2. It might not be quite as shocking or original as the first movie (except for [SPOILER ALERT] Randy’s brutal death), but it’s fun, offers up a few surprises and a decent twist, and we get to see Jada Pinkett Smith stabbed to death in the first ten minutes of the film which, if you dislike her as much as I do will be reason as any to watch it.

Personally I’m amazed this franchise is still going. There’s literally no more story to tell surely! Who’s still paying to see these movies?!

Are you excited for Scream 6? Let me know in the comments.👇
