Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) Official Teaser Trailer - Does Anyone Still Care About Avatar..?

So I watched the teaser trailer for the new Avatar sequel (due for release in December) last night. It looks ok but I can’t say I’m blown away by it, or even excited about another movie for that matter.

Someone said to me recently that it almost feels like too much time has gone by for people to really care about it. He said, “It’s not like it’s Star Wars” (or something to that effect).

He’s got a point though. I like the first film and in terms of visual effects it was groundbreaking but I’m not sure it could be called a “classic”. In fact, if it hadn’t been for the whole 3D fad around the time it was released I wonder if such a big deal would’ve been made about it (it was pretty special in 3D though I have to say).

This new movie is apparently the first of four planned sequels to the original 2009 film. It started filming in 2017 and was meant to be released last year but got postponed due to the pandemic. The planned release dates for each film are December 2022, December 2024, December 2026 and (you guessed it) December 2028.

What do you think? Are you chomping at the bit for more Avatar movies or do you think James Cameron might be being a little self-indulgent with this one?

Watch the trailer and let me know your thoughts.👇
